Taj Mahal
India's first Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, described Taj as a 'teardrop on the face of humanity'. This sermon in white marble stands testimony to immortal love of Emperor Shahjahan for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The structure made entirely of white marble, is decorated with exquisite pietra dura (stone inlay) work and embellished with semi-precious stones in the interiors of this poetry in marble. The monument is set around charbagh or four garden plans. The Persian influence is reflected through the split waterways adding freshness to the environs.
The full impact of this monument can be witnessed in the winter mornings when the mist clears and the radiant rays of the sun illuminate the Taj to reveal its majestic beauty. Come evening and the entire structure glows in full glory to the magic of the setting sun. Moonlight makes the Taj appear extraordinarily luminous and the Taj against the star spangled sky is to be seen to believe. A holiday in India is never complete without a visit to this world famous heritage monument.
Agra Fort
Another legacy of the Moghuls, the fort built by Akbar, was further beautified by his son Jahangir who was known for his love for the gardens. The crescent-shaped fort with its 20-metre high, 2.4-km outer walls contains a maze of buildings that form a small city within a city. The high, red sandstone walls loom over the Yamuna river. Behind this row of battlemens and bastions lies a refined world of marble pavilions, landscaped gardens and serene mosques.
Itam-Ud-Daulah's Tomb
Also known as the baby Taj, this tomb of Itmad-ud-daulah, was the first Moghul structure to be built in marble.
Jahangiri Mahal
The red sandstone Jahangiri Mahal is the first example of Akbar's attempt to blend ornate Hindu motifs with the more symmetrical Islamic style. The outer walls of the Jahangiri Mahal have a façade of carved blind arches highlighted in marble. The rooms surround an inner courtyard with halls to the north and south. Stone jalis screen the passageways that were used by the women of the household. There is also an open porch that overlooks the river. The rooms have finely-carved columns and niches and the palace may have been used by Jahangir's powerful queen Noor Jahan.
