The Kalachakra

Amravati 02 -16 January, 2006

The Kalachakra Kalachakra is a Sanskrit word derived from two words "Kala"- the Time and "Chakra"- the Wheel. So, Kalachakra stands for Time-Wheel, also translated as Time-Cycles. Much in this tradition revolves around the concept of time and cycles- from the cycles of the planets to the cycles of our breath and the practice of controlling the subtlest energies within one's body, on the path to enlightenment. The Kalachakra deity represents omniscience as everything in under the influence of time; he is time and therefore knows all. Similarly, the Wheel is beginning less and endless. Over the centuries the Kalachakra teachings have been transmitted in an unbroken lineage from teacher to student. In the 11th century the Kalachakra went from India to Tibet and during the 18th century the VII Dalai Lama introduced it to the Namgyal Monastery in Tibet. This continuous lineage extends to the present XIV Dalai Lama. The Kalachakra 2006 is scheduled from 02-16 January 2006 in Amravati, India. Travel Around India offers a specially designed journey of self-discovery to attend the holy ceremony performed by his holiness the H.H.Dalai Lama for world peace from 03-15 January 2006. On this unique pilgrimage we will also have time to explore the hidden treasures of Buddhist heritage, art and history at Amravati, in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Amaravati, located in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, was the site of a grand Buddhist stupa, dating back to the time of Emperor Ashoka. It is closely associated with Dhanayakata, which according to Buddhist scriptures was the place where Buddha first gave the Kalachakra Empowerment.

Some Practical information about Kalachakra Tour

During Kalachakra teachings people have suffered and complained of flu and cold like symptoms due to the large numbers of people and amount of dust generated by pilgrims. By limiting numbers and taking numerous health precautions, CAMP POTALA should reduce clients' experience of such symptoms, providing a tranquil rest place. By providing a selection of medication, we will be equipped to manage minor health ailments smoothly and promptly, reducing our guests discomfort and enhancing their appreciation of the teaching. Visiting India for the first time often creates worry due to the perceived health problems and need for vaccinations. We recommend each visitor to make an appointment with his or her GP or Doctor for advised vaccinations and medications.

The climate in Andhra Pradesh during January is mild sub-tropical, with temperatures ranging between 18-27 C or 65-80 F. Thus, guests coming from colder climates should pack lightweight clothing accordingly and remember to drink plenty of fresh, clean water while acclimatizing. During the evenings, we recommend lightweight long-sleeved shirts and trousers to reduce mosquito bites and maximize comfort.

Though, during the Kalachakra it is expected that there will be more English, Hindi and Tibetan speaker gatherings, CAMP POTALA will arrange English, Hindi, Tibetan and Telugu speaking staff at hand to help with all requests.
